Inspired by Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen, Quebec writer France Ducasse’s Épitaphe pour Carmen et son assassin is a sequel to the famous opera, in the form of a long, intimate monologue delivered by actress Marie-Ginette Guay, giving voice to the complex, moving figure of Don José’s mother.
The mother, grieving and alone while her son is imprisoned awaiting execution, reflects on her son’s deleterious love affair with Carmen, but also on a mother’s sometimes excessive love for her child. Tormented by the memory of this cursed Carmen, she is haunted by his song throughout her introspective journey from anger to love.
The skillful blending of France Ducasse’s dramatic text with Carmen’s well-known arias, performed by Rose Naggar-Tremblay, offers audiences a new reading of Bizet’s opera from a profoundly human and feminist angle.
This multidisciplinary work is directed by Jean-Sébastien Ouellette, with piano accompaniment by Marie-Hélène Greffard.
