data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In 1983, the history of lyric arts in Quebec City reached a turning point. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of pioneers at Th\u00e9\u00e2tre lyrique de Nouvelle-France, Op\u00e9ra de Qu\u00e9bec and later Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 lyrique d\u2019Aubigny who helped bring opera to Quebec City, the Op\u00e9ra de Qu\u00e9bec Foundation was created on January 7, 1983 and was soon followed by the Op\u00e9ra de Qu\u00e9bec Corporation on November 16 the same year. The corporation\u2019s mission was to produce professional opera performances in Quebec City.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d7f7e76 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d7f7e76\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Op\u00e9ra de Qu\u00e9bec set itself the goal of presenting two well-known operas per season, showcasing local talent as much as possible. The new company\u2019s first production, in May 1985, was Puccini\u2019s <em>Madama Butterfly<\/em>. For the debut performance, Op\u00e9ra de Qu\u00e9bec unveiled an avant-garde process that involved using surtitles in French. Singers such as Sonia Racine, Lyne Fortin, H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Fortin, Agathe Martel, Odette Beaupr\u00e9, Monique Pag\u00e9, Louis Langelier, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Lapointe, and Claude Robin-Pelletier, to name but a few. The first of these was an initiative to allow high schoolers in years I though V to attend general rehearsals. As a result more than 40,000 young people in the region have been introduced to opera since spring 1999. Next, the \u201cDraw me an Opera\u201d competition (2000 to 2004) was a novel way for elementary-school students in the Quebec City area to not only take an interest in opera but also be part of a production team and help make scenery and costumes based on their drawings. Competition winners helped stage four Op\u00e9ra de Qu\u00e9bec productions in four seasons: <em>Mozart\u2019s Die Zauberfl\u00f6te<\/em> (June 2000), Humperdinck\u2019s <em>H\u00e4nsel und Gretel<\/em> (October 2001), <em>Mozart\u2019s Die Entf\u00fchrung aus dem Serail<\/em> (March 2003) and Donizetti\u2019s <em>L\u2019Elisir d\u2019Amore<\/em> (March 2004).<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0293994 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0293994\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Bernard Labadie was artistic and musical director until the end of the 2002\u20132003 season when Gr\u00e9goire Legendre added artistic direction to his role as general manager. It was under Legendre\u2019s leadership that the world premier of <em>Starmania, the Opera <\/em>by Luc Plamondon and Michel Berger, took place in spring 2008. Later, Robert Lepage staged a double bill with <em>Bluebeard\u2019s Castle<\/em> by Bartok and Erwartung by Sch\u00f6nberg for the first time in Quebec City. In November 2009, Op\u00e9ra de Qu\u00e9bec was presented with the Ville de Qu\u00e9bec prize at the Excellence Awards for Arts and Culture ceremony for hosting Pl\u00e1cido Domingo\u2019s Operalia, The World Opera Competition in 2008. The Festival gave local audiences a chance to witness the Canadian premier of <em>A Magic Flute<\/em>, Peter Brook\u2019s adaptation of the opera by Mozart, and the Qu\u00e9bec premier of <em>The Nightingale and Other Fables<\/em> based on the opera by Stravinsky, staged by Robert Lepage. Other high-profile events were held in addition to these two exciting productions. The Festival d\u2019op\u00e9ra de Qu\u00e9bec won the Quebec City Concert of the Year award for <em>The Nightingale and Other Fables<\/em>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div
