Happening in the 1780s, the scene opens with Christmas carols sung by the children of the Bailli of Wetzlar in the middle of July and concludes on Christmas Eve. Since the death of their mother, the eldest, Charlotte, has been in charge of her siblings. Moved by this idyllic scene and the goodness of the young girl, the poet Werther becomes in love with her: yet, she promised her dying mother to unite with Albert and cannot renounce her promise. Werther is burdened with sorrow. Shaken by the young man’s despair, Charlotte rereads the letters Werther sent her and realizes that she loves him in return. Caught in a sudden premonition, she goes in search of him and finds him fatally wounded. She confesses her love to him and he dies in her arms while the Christmas carols sound in the distance.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The action takes place in 586 BC. Nabucco, king of Babylon, triumphed over the Hebrews. By contrast, Zaccaria, the high priest of the Hebrews, holds Fenena, the daughter of Nabucco, hostage, whom he threatens to kill. Isma\u00ebl, the nephew of the king of Jerusalem, has custody of them: and the two young men are madly in love. Abigail, the alleged daughter of Nabucco and also in love with Isma\u00ebl, comes and discovers their idyll. Learning soon after that she was in fact a slave, Abigail wants revenge on Nabucco and her rival Fenena. She becomes Queen of Babylon through ingenious subterfuges, imprisoning Nabucco, who watches helplessly her triumph. But! Coup de the\u00e2tre<\/em>! Nabucco’s guards come to liberate him and, when the Jewish people are about to be massacred, he orders his release.
